How YonksTEAM is using Lunch & Learn and a Burned Out Advisor retreat to screen the fractional CFO who will help steward OCPA Group into 2027, a playbook borrowed from Anthropic’s Daniela Amodei.
Daniela Amodei has an interview technique that looks nothing like an interview.
“Instead of starting a company together, go on vacation together,” the Anthropic cofounder and president said during a talk at the Stanford Graduate School of Business earlier this year. “Share a room with them. Be like, ‘How did that go?’ And if you’re like, ‘Man, all I wanna do is spend more time with you,’ great.”
And if it goes the other way? “If you’re like, ‘Really, I’m gonna need a vacation to recover from my vacation,’ it might be the wrong choice.”
Fortune wrote this up: the version we’re reading ran October 4, 2026; the story first published on Fortune.com on May 12, 2026 under a headline that says the quiet part out loud: entrepreneurs should go on vacation to road test potential cofounders. If they’re a drain, they’re “the wrong choice.” Fortune’s own summary line is the one we’d tattoo on a conference mug: travel together before you build together.
(To be clear: Anthropic has nothing to do with what we’re about to describe. We just think she’s right.)
Amodei was talking about cofounders. We’re borrowing the logic, not the job title.
The seat we’re building toward
In 2027, YonksTEAM wants an xCFO in our corner (our shorthand for a fractional Chief Financial Officer) to help steward OCPA Group, the mothership brand for our work with accounting advisors and financial advisors, into its next stage.
That’s a person, not a spreadsheet. And a résumé reads like a spreadsheet. Credentials earn someone a conversation; they don’t tell you whether three days in shared air leaves you energized or drained. So instead of running a formal search first, we’re running our screen where real life already happens: the Lunch & Learns are the open door where we first meet you; the retreat is where consideration happens.
On the credential side, we’re primarily seeking candidates who hold the Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA). It doesn’t replace the screen. The “vacation test” exists precisely because a credential can’t tell you how someone shares a room but it’s the professional foundation the seat stands on.
The open door: Lunch & Learn
Our L&L series runs this fall under one theme: “How To Create Client Stickiness with Responsible Agentic AI.” October runs it close to home: Tampa (Oct 13 and 27), Denver (Oct 14 and 21), Orlando (Oct 20 and 29), and Miami (Oct 28). November goes on the road and it’s a longer run than any one tour: Tampa (Nov 3), Salt Lake City (Nov 10–12): the 10th and 11th are a sibling session, Burned Out Dev; the 12th is Client Stickiness four-city Texas tour: Houston (Nov 16), San Antonio (Nov 17), Dallas (Nov 18), and Austin (Nov 19) and back to Denver (Nov 24 and Nov 30).
A Lunch & Learn is a bad place to bluff and a great place to learn. Watch how someone behaves when they aren’t holding the microphone: how they treat the host, whether they ask real questions, whether they came to learn or to be seen. We care deeply about #ResponsibleAgenticAI — human-and-agent collaboration done honestly and curiosity about that craft is non-negotiable for the seat.
Where consideration happens: the Burned Out Advisor Retreat (this is the vacation test)
R&R: Recover & Revenue™, the Burned Out Advisor Retreat, Tradewinds Island Grand, St. Pete Beach, Florida, November 4–6, 2026. Three days with advisors who are recovering from burnout and rebuilding revenue. Capped at 50 people.
One rule sets the frame, and we’ll say it plainly: consideration for the 2027 xCFO seat starts with being in the room at the retreat. That’s the prerequisite. Everything else in this post is how we’ll be paying attention once you’re there.
This is Amodei’s test with the volume turned up: shared meals, long days, real conversations, and nowhere to hide. If we walk away thinking “I can’t wait to spend more time with that person,” that’s signal. If we walk away needing a vacation to recover from them, that’s the wrong choice both for a cofounder and doubly for the person who would help steward our money.
We screen at a burnout-recovery retreat on purpose. It’s our life’s work to help CPAs and accountants come back from burnout and grow revenue, and because tired and honest shows you character faster than any boardroom ever will.
What we’re actually watching for
- The CGMA credential. We’re primarily seeking candidates who hold the CGMA — Chartered Global Management Accountant (AICPA & CIMA). Everything below is the part a credential can’t prove.
- Integrity with money. The seat touches treasury, reporting, and trust. There is no interview answer that substitutes for watching someone be careful with a shared dollar.
- Comfort with transparency. We build in public. A finance partner who needs a curtain doesn’t fit this household.
- A learning posture toward agentic AI. Not “prompt engineer” on a résumé — genuine curiosity about what human + agent teams make possible for a professional practice.
- Generosity when tired. Retreats expose takers and reveal givers. Amodei’s phrase for the bad outcome is “a drain.” We’ve all met that person. We’re not hiring them.
- The same picture of the future. Amodei’s other warning is quieter and just as true: if two partners leave a room and one has drawn a unicorn and the other a platypus, it doesn’t end well. Vision alignment gets tested in conversation, not on a term sheet.
What this post is not
- Not a job posting. The fractional-CFO role description is a separate instrument and isn’t published here. This is a strategy post — how we intend to choose, not an open offer.
- Not a dated promise. 2027 is our target window, not a calendar commitment.
- Not an application link. The retreat is capped at 50 seats and the registration rails are still being finalized on our side, so we’re not publishing a signup URL today. If you want to be in the room, the honest path is simple: show up. Come to a Lunch & Learn. Find us at the retreat. Or say hello at yonks.team/contact and we’ll point you to the right door.
Our rule for 2027 is simple, and we’ll say it in public: money only moves from this household to people we already like and trust. The Lunch & Learns and the retreat are where we find out.
See you at lunch.
